Length
and Frequency of Sessions
Initially, a thorough assessment usually requires
2-4 forty-five minute appointments, after which
we discuss a plan for treatment. Psychotherapy
may involve a range of approaches from short-term
problem focused psychotherapy to supportive
therapy to more extensive long-term psychodynamic
(psychoanalytically oriented) psychotherapy.
I typically work with
people on a weekly basis; however, it is not
uncommon for me to work every other week when
acute issues have been resolved or when financial
concerns limit the frequency of sessions. Life-long
problems, such as coping with the effects of
trauma, significant loss or disability, usually
require weekly sessions. I do work more intensively
with some individuals (2-3 times per week) when
there is a crisis, or when working more intensively
is warranted. All of these issues are discussed
and are part of the collaborative nature of
the work.
